Poker in the games? Madison Avenue's
"All In"
With speculation on the rise that the upcoming vote of the 2004 games committee will open the door for poker to become a part of the games, corporate sponsors everywhere are chomping at their opportunistic little bits to get a piece of the pot. Rumors are circling of sponsorships ranging from coffee to ultra-absorbent toilet paper, and it seems that the once seedy game is fast becoming the darling of Madison Avenue.
"These poker players have an everyman quality that really appeals to Americans" said Alistair Cole, chairman of the Marketing Fad Exploitation Council. "The average American just can't relate to a badminton champ, they don't see themselves as a pole vaulter, and they're plain terrified by synchronized swimming. But when it comes to poker, they get it."
Months before the games, the premier athletes in the poker world are already inking deals. Now comes news that Chippies cereal — who traditionally adorns their box with the more spandex-clad of athletes — is in talks with poker champ Chris Ferguson for their 2004 games box.
A Chippies spokesperson explains, "The draw of these poker athletes is undeniable. It really is the story of a group of average Joes, conquering all odds to achieve their dream. It's what America's all about. You see, I may never be able to do a one-armed handspring, or run a 5-minute mile, but I do have a beer gut, love for money, and a pornography problem — and there are millions of Americans just like me." |
