George Danzer wins Third WSOP Bracelet of 2014 - Takes Big POY Lead

2014 has truly been a breakout year for George Danzer. The German poker pro won two gold bracelets in the Vegas-based WSOP this past summer. And he followed this up with a recent victory in the 2014 WSOP Asia-Pacific A$5,000 Eight Game event.

Danzer beat out a 48-player field to win this tourney along with A$84,600. In the end, he faced Scott Clements, who was also chasing a third-career gold bracelet. However, Danzer got the better of this matchup following a back-and-forth battle.

What's interesting is that the German poker pro was merely shooting for sixth place, which would have given him the lead again over Brandon Shack-Harris in the 2014 WSOP Player of the Year race. So to not only retake the lead, but also win Event #8 was a boost to Danzer. "You dream of something like this," he said following the win. "I wanted to get sixth place in this tournament. That's what I wanted to accomplish. I was really short and just nitting it up to the bubble because it was so important for Player of the Year."

With the victory, Danzer now holds over a 100-point lead in the POY race. And given that there are only two tournaments left, he's looking pretty comfortable in his lead. However, Danzer knows better than to count out Shack-Harris - especially with the lead exchanging hands several times already. "I'm in the lead now but I'm not sure about anything!" He added, "It will end when one of us busts in the $25,000 High Roller, not before."

Both Danzer and Shack-Harris will be competing against each other in the $10k WSOP APAC Main Event and the $25k High Roller. So it'll be interesting to see if either player makes one last deep run in this year's WSOP festivities.
